A Vision Becoming Reality

This March, we had the incredible privilege of traveling to Kenya with our dear friends, Chuck and Tammy, to visit our indigenous missionary, Nelly. It was a trip filled with encouragement, hope, and a renewed vision for what God is doing in this community.

One of the first places we visited was Nelly's current rental home pictured above. While she welcomes everyone with joy and generosity, her living conditions are very humble. The house is small, and when the girls are home from school on break, they sleep on mattresses on the living room floor. The bathroom is located outside, and every meal is prepared over an open fire. Despite having so little, Nelly's heart for serving others is extraordinary. She lovingly prepared a meal of homemade chapati and lentils for us, and it was absolutely delicious. While we were visiting, a neighborhood girl came looking for food. She had planned to take an avocado from one of Nelly's trees, but instead, Nelly immediately invited her inside to share a meal. We learned this isn't unusual—it's simply who Nelly is. She faithfully shares whatever God has provided with her neighbors, often feeding those in need before thinking of herself.

Her generosity is a beautiful picture of Christ's love.

Walking the Future

One of the highlights of our trip was finally walking on the land that God has provided for the future Empowerment Project. The property is only a short walk from Nelly's current home, allowing her to remain in the same community where she has faithfully ministered for years.

It was exciting to see that Nelly and the older children have already planted crops across the property. They are harvesting food for their own meals and selling the surplus to help provide for their needs.

Our friend Chuck, an incredibly gifted architect, and his wife, Tammy carefully measured the property and designed the plans for what will become the future Empowerment Project.

The Empowerment Project

Our vision is to build a safe, loving home where vulnerable children can flourish. This will be a space where the children we support can stay while they are on school break, and also a space for a temporary space for children in crisis. 

The new home will provide:

• A comfortable home for up to 8 girls with bunk beds.

• Space for up to 8 boys.

• An indoor kitchen.

• A proper bedroom and office for Nelly.

• Land to have crops, and possibility for other sustainability projects

• More room to welcome guests, mentor children, and continue serving the community.

The estimated cost of this project is $100,000.

We are praying for 100 people to partner with us by giving $1,000 each, although gifts of any amount will help bring this vision to life.

A New Opportunity:

Safe Water for the Community

As we continued walking the property, we discovered something we hadn't anticipated. Bordering our land is another parcel that contains a natural spring. Every day, hundreds of people come to collect water from this spring because it is one of the only available water sources in the area. Sadly, the spring is unprotected. Trash surrounds it, and the opening where people collect water leaves it vulnerable to contamination, making the water unsafe. If we are able to purchase this adjoining property, we can protect the spring and develop it into a safe community well, providing clean, fresh drinking water for hundreds of people every day The estimated cost to purchase the land and complete the well project is $25,000.

THE SILENT SERMON

In the Chinese cultural revolution back in the 60’s 1000’s of Chinese were being killed and persecuted for converting to Christianity, for simply turning from a life of hate to a life of love.

Chinese Cultural Revolution

During this time of intense persecution Chinese believers were forced to hold their church services underground in caves and at secret locations and it was at one of these secret meetings where now famous Chinese preacher Watchman Nee knew there was a government spy in the meeting and he preached a famous sermon which has come to be called the “THE SILENT SERMON.”

Watchman Nee was reported to have raised a glass of water, took a sip from it, and then SMASHED it to the floor where he then stomped on it with his heel shattering the glass even further into thousands of pieces. He then silently walked out of the meeting. The metaphor was well understood by the Chinese Christians that the more they were persecuted and killed the more the good news of Jesus would spread like the shards of glass from that cup splintering into thousands of pieces.

I think of the “THE SILENT SERMON” as I process the brutal assassination of my Christian brother and American patriot Charlie Kirk, which also happened on the eve of one of the darkest anniversary’s in America’s history, 9/11. I can’t help but to be heavy hearted and feel the same pain, angst, confusion, and fear that I felt when I was walking up my high school steps and heard that a plane had flown into the twin towers and we rushed into one our classrooms and flipped the TV on just in time to watch the second plane fly into the second tower. It was as if I was watching a movie and in some weird way this wasn’t really real. I felt this same feeling when I, against my bettter judgement, saw the brutality and finality of the violence committed against my brother in Christ Charlie Kirk, in front of his wife and kids. It was as if I was watching a terrible AI video and someone was going to come out and say it was all a hoax.

But it was not fake. It is real and my heart breaks for his wife and kids who will now have to grow up without a loving, dedicated husband and father who was not a hate monger as he is trying to be twisted into by others also operating in the anti-Christ spirit. The same enemy that thinks it can stomp out Christianity by killing believers in the Congo, in China, is the same enemy we have just witnessed firsthand in America.

As I have been processing this tragic event of the assassination, wresting through tears, thinking about my own family and wondering if I should lend a thought, a voice to the pile of condolences I realized that it’s not about me and my voice, but it’s simply about standing up for what’s right no matter the cost and that is what has inspired me about Charlie. He was brave, and died doing what he was called to do. And what he was doing was right. He did it out of love, no matter the cost, and so should we.

Satan wants to steal, kill, and destroy but Jesus famous words recorded in Matthew 16:25 were: “If anyone wants to keep his life safe, he will lose it. If anyone gives up his life because of Me, he will save it.”

Thank you Charlie for giving your life and being an example of what true Christianity looks like. You were taken too young, but your testimony will live on forever and continue to inspire thousands of “pieces of glass” to know Jesus more fully — I am one of those inspired and challenged by your sacrifice to continue to fight the good fight like you did.

Helping Those in Poverty Become More Sustainable: Why It's More Important Than Just Sending Money

When we think about alleviating poverty, the first thing that often comes to mind is providing immediate financial aid. It’s easy to understand why—money can address urgent needs like food, shelter, and medical care. And in situations of dire crisis, sending funds can make a significant impact. But while monetary donations are important, they don’t always provide the long-term solutions that are necessary to help individuals and communities break the cycle of poverty. True, lasting change comes when we empower people to become more self-sufficient and sustainable. It’s not just about giving a handout, but rather a hand up—offering the tools, knowledge, and resources that enable individuals to take control of their lives and improve their own circumstances.

Here’s why helping those in poverty become more sustainable is more important than simply sending money:

1. Money Alone Doesn’t Solve the Root Causes of Poverty

Poverty is a complex, multifaceted issue. It’s not just a lack of money; it’s often tied to issues like limited access to education, inadequate healthcare, lack of employment opportunities, and systemic inequality. If we only focus on short-term financial aid, we risk overlooking the root causes of poverty that need to be addressed for sustainable change.

For instance, someone might receive money to pay for food or rent, but if they don’t have the skills or job opportunities to secure long-term income, the cycle of poverty will continue. A donation can relieve immediate hardship, but without access to education, training, or support systems, that relief may be temporary, and they may find themselves back in a similar situation a few months down the line.

2. Empowerment Through Education and Skill-Building

One of the most powerful ways to break the cycle of poverty is through education. By investing in education—whether that’s formal schooling, vocational training, or life skills workshops—we provide individuals with the tools they need to improve their livelihoods. Education equips people with the ability to access better job opportunities, negotiate better wages, and make informed decisions about their health and finances.

For example, teaching people how to read and write, or providing job-specific training (like carpentry, coding, or agricultural skills) can drastically increase their earning potential and overall quality of life. Sustainable programs that focus on education or skill-building empower people to provide for themselves and their families without becoming reliant on external aid.

3. Fostering Local Economies and Community Development

Sustainability is not just about individual success but also about building strong, resilient communities. When we focus on helping individuals develop skills or start businesses, we help stimulate local economies. This creates a ripple effect where those who become economically stable can hire others, create local markets, and invest in community infrastructure.

Programs that provide micro-loans or support local entrepreneurship, for instance, can have a profound impact. Rather than just handing out money, these initiatives give people the tools and support to create sustainable livelihoods. As people start small businesses, they’re not only becoming more financially independent but also contributing to the economic well-being of their communities.

4. Developing Sustainable Solutions That Don’t Create Dependency

One of the biggest risks and things we have tragically witnessed too many times first hand of simply sending money to those in need is that it can foster dependency. While immediate relief can be life-saving, an ongoing cycle of aid without long-term planning can trap individuals and families in a state of dependence on external support. This, in turn, can erode the sense of agency and self-reliance that is crucial to long-term well-being.

On the other hand, sustainable poverty alleviation programs focus on equipping people with knowledge, resources, and opportunities that allow them to stand on their own. Instead of becoming reliant on charity, they develop skills and strategies to weather economic challenges and take control of their future. Whether it’s learning how to grow food more efficiently, manage a budget, or access healthcare services, these tools foster independence and resilience.

5. Environmental Sustainability and Long-Term Health

When we focus on long-term sustainability, it’s not just about financial independence—it’s also about ensuring that individuals and communities can thrive in a healthy, sustainable environment. Many poverty-stricken communities are deeply affected by government corruption leading to issues of poor sanitation, and overcrowded slum areas. Providing resources to help people adopt sustainable farming practices, better living situations, or cleaner water solutions, not only improves their immediate quality of life but also helps safeguard their future.

For example, agricultural training that teaches farmers how to work with the land in an environmentally sustainable way can result in higher yields, better soil health, and long-term food security. Similarly, programs that teach families how to access clean water or build solar-powered homes can significantly reduce health risks and improve quality of life.

6. Fostering a Sense of Dignity and Self-Worth

Sustainability isn’t just about survival; it’s about helping people regain their sense of dignity and self-worth. Go back and read that last sentence again, because it is so important!

Receiving a handout, no matter how well-intentioned, can sometimes leave people feeling powerless or ashamed. In contrast, when people are empowered to improve their own lives through skills, education, and community support, they gain a sense of pride in their accomplishments.

Imagine a woman who receives a micro-loan to start a small business. As her business grows and she sees her hard work paying off, her confidence and self-respect grow too. She is not just surviving, she is thriving. She becomes a role model in her community, and her success inspires others to follow suit.

7. More Impactful, Scalable Solutions

Sustainable poverty alleviation strategies tend to be more scalable and adaptable. By focusing on long-term solutions like education, entrepreneurship, and sustainable agriculture, the impact can grow over time and spread to more people. It’s not just about providing temporary relief; it’s about creating systems and structures that can be replicated in other regions or communities.

For example, a program that trains farmers in sustainable farming techniques can be implemented in multiple communities, training hundreds or even thousands of people who can, in turn, teach others. This creates a multiplier effect that far exceeds the impact of one-time financial donations.

Conclusion: The Shift from Aid to Empowerment

While sending money is sometimes necessary, it’s not enough to solve the deeper, more complex issues associated with poverty. True change requires a shift from a "handout" mentality to one of empowerment and self-sufficiency. Ultimately, it’s about giving people the tools, resources, and opportunities to create lasting change in their own lives. Sustainable poverty alleviation isn’t just about charity—it’s about creating the conditions for people to lift themselves out of poverty, for good.

If we focus on helping people become more sustainable, the benefits will multiply, creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity, self-sufficiency, and hope for the future.
